Understanding Wedding Videography Packages and What They Include

Why the Package Details Matter More Than the Price Tag
Most UK couples start their videography search the same way: a quick look at prices, a flick through a few showreels, then a scramble to work out why one quote is £900 and another is £2,400. The honest answer is that they are rarely selling the same thing. A wedding film package is built from four moving parts — how many hours are covered, how many videographers attend, how long the finished edit runs, and whether you receive the raw footage alongside it. Understand those four, and comparing quotes becomes genuinely straightforward.
It also helps to know what you actually want. Some couples dream of a three-minute cinematic reel set to music. Others want to hear every speech in full, twenty years from now. Neither is wrong, but they point to very different packages.
Coverage Hours: Where the Value Really Sits
Coverage is the number of hours a videographer is filming on the day. It is usually the single biggest factor in the price, so read the small print carefully.
- Six to eight hours is the most common mid-range option. It typically starts with preparations and finishes shortly after the first dance, which suits couples having a shorter day or a civil ceremony followed by a relaxed reception.
- Ten to twelve hours is the full-day standard. It covers morning preparations through to dancing, speeches and the evening party, with no one clock-watching.
- Hourly add-ons are usually available, but they are cheaper to book in advance than to request on the day. If your venue has a strict curfew, check whether the last hour is worth paying for — a packed dance floor at 11pm films very differently to an emptying room.
Ask whether travel time between the ceremony and reception counts towards your hours. Some videographers pause the clock during the wedding breakfast; others do not. That difference alone can be worth an hour of coverage.
One Videographer or Two?
A solo videographer can produce a beautiful film, and for intimate weddings of 40 to 60 guests it is often all you need. They will move between the key moments — vows, confetti, speeches, first dance — and rely on experience to anticipate where to stand.
Two videographers change what is possible. While one films the couple's reactions during the speeches, the other can capture the guests laughing. During preparations, one can be with each partner. If you are having a church ceremony with a long aisle, a large venue with multiple rooms, or a guest list over 100, a second shooter usually pays for itself in coverage you would otherwise miss.
Worth noting: a second videographer is often a trusted associate rather than the person who will edit your film. That is completely normal, but do ask who will actually cut the footage, and whether you can see an example of their work.
Edited Films: Highlights, Feature Length and Everything Between
This is where quotes get genuinely hard to compare, because "a wedding film" can mean almost anything from four minutes to ninety.
- Highlights reel (3–6 minutes) is the cinematic version — set to licensed music, using the best moments of the day. It is the piece you will actually show people.
- Feature film (15–30 minutes) includes longer sequences: full vows, extended speeches, and more of the day's natural sound. Many packages include both a highlights reel and a longer edit.
- Documentary edit (45–90 minutes) is closer to a record than a film, with ceremonies and speeches shown almost in full. Couples who value the archive element often choose this.
Licensed music matters more than most people realise. Videographers cannot legally use chart songs without a licence, so check that the music in your film is properly cleared — it protects you if you ever share it publicly.
Raw Footage, Extras and What Is Usually Add-On
Raw, unedited footage is one of the most misunderstood items on a quote. Some videographers include it as standard, some charge £150–£400 for a hard drive or download link, and some never release it at all. There are fair reasons for each: ungraded footage looks nothing like the finished film, and a videographer may feel it misrepresents their work. Still, many couples value having it.
Other items that frequently sit outside the base package:
- A teaser clip delivered within 48 hours for social media
- Drone coverage, where the venue and CAA rules permit it
- Additional camera angles, such as a second angle on the vows
- Parent or gift copies, and USB or boxed presentation sets
- A same-day edit, screened during the evening reception
Questions to Ask Before You Book
Take these to every videographer you speak to, and the packages will almost compare themselves.
- How many hours are included, and what does an extra hour cost?
- How many videographers will attend, and who edits the film?
- What is the finished running time, and do we get a highlights reel as well?
- Is raw footage included, and in what format?
- How long until delivery, and how is the film sent to us?
- What deposit secures the date, and what is the cancellation policy?
Finally, remember what you are buying. Long after the flowers have gone and the cake has been eaten, the film is the thing that lets you hear your mum's speech again. Spend your budget on the coverage and the edit you will genuinely rewatch — not on extras that sit in a drawer.
