Budgeting for Wedding Videography Without Compromising Quality

Put Video on the Budget Before the Venue Steals It
It is easy to treat wedding videography as the line item you trim when the venue deposit, catering and dress have eaten the fund. But video is the one record that captures movement, sound and personality: the quiver in your partner's voice, your dad's speech, the confetti walk, the dance floor mayhem. Photographs freeze moments; film lets you step back inside them. In the UK, where weather can turn a garden party into a marquee dash, having a videographer who knows how to work with changing light and tight timelines is worth planning for properly.
As a rule of thumb, many UK couples allocate 5–10% of their total wedding budget to videography. On a £20,000 wedding, that is £1,000–£2,000; on a £35,000 wedding, £1,750–£3,500. That range can feel broad because videography packages vary enormously. The key is to decide what you actually want to watch in five, ten or twenty years, then build your budget around that, rather than comparing quotes with no brief.
Choose Your Core Film Format First
Before you ask for prices, choose between the main formats. Most UK videographers offer a mix.
- Full-day cinematic film: coverage from preparations to first dances, often with a second shooter, edited to 15–30 minutes. Typical UK cost: £1,800–£4,000, more in London and the South East.
- Highlight film: a shorter 3–8 minute edit, often with vows and speeches woven in. Typical cost: £1,000–£2,200.
- Ceremony and speeches only: ideal if you want the formalities recorded but not the dance floor. Typical cost: £500–£1,200.
- Documentary edit: longer, less stylised coverage of ceremony and speeches, sometimes with full versions. Typical cost: £800–£1,800.
Adding a second camera, drone footage, or a teaser for social media usually adds £200–£600 per item. Delivery of raw footage can add £150–£400. These extras are not automatically better; they simply serve different priorities.
Decide What Matters Most Before Comparing Quotes
Write a shortlist of non-negotiables. Ask each other: do we care more about hearing every word of the ceremony, or about a beautiful three-minute film we will actually share? Do we want preparations, or is the ceremony the heart of the day? Would we rather have a longer edit or a quicker turnaround?
Your answers will shape the brief. For example, a couple marrying in a registry office with 30 guests may prize clean audio and a ceremony-only film. A couple in a marquee with a live band may want full-day coverage and a second shooter to catch guests' reactions. Neither is wrong. The mistake is paying for coverage you will never watch, or cutting the one element you will regret missing. If grandparents are travelling far, or a family member is giving a speech, prioritise audio and a second camera.
Allocate Your Budget in Layers
Once you know your priorities, divide your videography budget into three layers:
- Core coverage: the hours and cameras needed for your must-have moments. This is where most of the money should go.
- Audio and backup: a lapel mic for the celebrant or registrar, a feed from the PA for speeches, and backup recording. This is not glamorous, but poor sound ruins a film faster than soft focus.
- Finishing touches: drone shots, teaser edits, extra hours, raw footage, USB boxes. Add these only if the core is secure.
Also budget for travel and expenses. UK suppliers may charge 45p–£1 per mile beyond a set radius, plus accommodation if your venue is far from home. Ask whether quotes include VAT. A £1,500 quote plus 20% VAT is £1,800, which can push you over budget if you have not planned for it.
Where You Can Save Without Losing Quality
Quality is not only about price; it is about fit, experience and editing skill. You can reduce costs without settling for a poor film.
- Book off-peak: Friday, Sunday, November to March, and non-school-holiday dates are often cheaper.
- Reduce hours: start coverage at the ceremony rather than preparations, or finish after the first dance.
- Skip the drone: if your venue does not allow it or the weather is unreliable, put the money into audio instead.
- Choose digital delivery: a downloadable gallery and online film cost less than presentation boxes and USB drives.
- Hire a newer filmmaker with a strong portfolio: less experience does not mean poor quality, but check full weddings, not just highlight reels.
- Bundle with your photographer: some UK suppliers work as a team or offer a discount, but only if you like both styles.
Compare Quotes Fairly and Ask the Right Questions
When quotes arrive, compare like for like. Check the number of hours, cameras, shooters, edit length, audio equipment, turnaround time, and whether travel and VAT are included. Ask how they back up footage, what happens if they are ill, and whether they have insurance. Confirm music licensing for any commercial tracks, and ask for a contract that sets out deliverables and payment schedule. A deposit of 20–30% is normal; final payment is often due shortly before or after the wedding.
Finally, trust your gut on the person. You will spend more time with your videographer on the day than almost any other supplier. If they listen, ask thoughtful questions and make you feel at ease, that is worth as much as an extra camera. Decide what matters, allocate accordingly, then compare quotes with confidence.
